Former politician Brian Ó Domhnaill surges to race walk silver at World Masters

Brian Ó Domhnaill celebrates in Florida

Former politician Brian Ó Domhnaill has won a silver medal at the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships.

Ó Domhnaill, a former Senator, took silver in the M45 3000m race walk in Florida.

At the Alachua County Sports and Events Center, he clocked 14:10.90 to take second spot.

Spaniard Juan Manuel Morales Del Castillo won in 12:28.38 with Ó Domhnaill second ahead of Melvin Martinez Mercado of Puerto Rica, who crossed the line in 15:01.21.

Ó Domhnaill, who competes under Killybegs AC and is now based in Canada, is also listed to go in the 10km road race walk on Sunday.

The Falcarragh native was previously a bronze medal winner at the European Masters Indoor Championships in 2015.

Ó Domhnaill was a Fianna Fáil County Councillor who was nominated to the Seanad by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in 2007.

He lost his seat on the agriculture panel to Niall Blaney in 2020 having resigned from Fianna Fáil in 2016 after he was found to have breached ethics legislation in relation to expenses.
