A place at the European Championships is up for grabs for Letterkenny mixed martial artist Jordan Furey this weekend.

Furey goes to the cage at the inaugural Irish National MMA Championships in Dublin.

The winners from each category will secure a spot for the IMMAF European Championships later this year.

Furey, ended at number two, is in a senior welterweight semi-final on Saturday. The Letterkenny man, 5-0 as a mixed martial artist, awaits the winner of a quarter-final between Ethan Guerin (SBG Corkl/Killarney) and Liam McGeogh (MMA Cork).

This weekend’s Championships are being held at SBG HQ, where Furey trains.

In December, Furey retained the Clan Wars super lightweight title in Belfast, stopping Fredrick Høifødt after just 72 seconds.

Furey overcame the Norwegian via submission to keep hold of his title.

Furey learned his trade initially under Brian Coyle at Rilion Gracie Ireland in Letterkenny before making a big move to the capital last year. He works at SBG with John Kavanagh, coach to UFC superstar Conor McGregor, and the hard yards are put in.
