English won a 400m race at the NIA Live Meet.

The Finn Valley AC man, an 800m specialist, ran an excellent last lap to finish in 47.21 seconds.

English was pushed all the way by another Irish Olympian, Marcus Lawlor of Clonliffe Harriers (47.50). Lawlor, who competed in the 200m at the Olympic Games, led the charge until English kicked late to win an exciting race.

Three-time European medalist English had the start to his season delayed.

He withdrew from an 800m race at the Millrose Games in New York last month due to a hamstring injury.

Last year, English set new Irish 800m outdoor (1:45.71) and indoor (1:46.10) records and competed at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

English has already secured qualification for the 2022 World Athletics Championships, which take place in Eugene, Oregon in July.

The 28-year-old will also compete in the 2022 European Athletics Championships, which are held in Munich in August.
