Mark English made an impressive winning start to his outdoor season on Saturday.

The Finn Valley AC man won the men’s 800m at the IFAM Outdoor International Flanders Athletics Meet.

English won in 1:46.61, edging Tobias Gronstad of Norway (1:46.68) and Morocco’s Oussama Nabil (1:46.77).

English’s showing at the Sport Vlaanderen in Oordegem certainly represents an encouraging performance with European and World Championships on his horizon.

The two-time Olympian, who set new Irish 800m records, indoor and outdoor, in 2021, laid down a neat marker with Saturday’s win.

In Pace, France, Ann-Marie McGlynn finished 25th at the European 10,000m Cup.

McGlynn has been in superb form of late, recently setting a new 5,000m personal best of 15:46.08 in Belfast.

The Letterkenny AC woman finished in a season’s best 33:31.73 with Yasemin Can from Turkey winning in 31:20.18.

McGlynn, who also competed in the 2018 and 2019 versions of this event, was the leading Irish finisher, three places ahead of the 28th-placed Aoibhe Richardson, who came home in 34:22.31.
