A homecoming reception for European 800m bronze medalist Mark English will take place at Finn Valley AC on Wednesday.

English won bronze on Sunday in Munich - the fourth European medal of his career.

The Finn Valley AC runner finished in 1:45.19 in the men’s 800m final at the Olympiastadion and will be given a big welcome back to Donegal on Wednesday at 5pm.

“This is an opportunity for people, not just those in the immediate Finn Valley community, in Donegal to acknowledge a serious achievement,” Finn Valley AC chairperson and former Irish athletics team manager Patsy McGonagle told Donegal Live.

“This is an athlete who has just collected his fourth European Championship medal - a significant lifetime achievement.

“Mark is an athlete who has come all the way from being a young boy at Woodlands National School to the European Championships.”

In medalling on Sunday, he came the first Irishman to become a multiple medal at the European Championships, eight years after winning a bronze in Zurich.

The 29-year-old also has two European Indoor medals, silver in 2015 and bronze in 2019.

At the recent World Championships in Oregon, English was just two hundredths of a second from making the final.

English is the Irish 800m indoor and outdoor record holder.

McGonagle said: “His form over the last period has indicated that he has continued to improve and get stronger in every respect. His control and his delivery has been special, bringing us to a point where we’re excited as we approach the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and, of course, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.”

English was one of four Finn Valley AC athletes competing in Munich. The Flanagan twins, Eilish and Roisin, will also be present at Wednesday’s homecoming. Brendan Boyce, who finished 10th in the 35k race walk has returned to his base in Cork.
