The Donegal Junior League is expected to introduce a third tier to its Saturday League for the 2023/24 season.

In the season just gone, 23 teams competed across the Glencar Inn Division 1 and the Old Orchard Division 2.

Last summer, several new applications were rejected by League officials with clubs like Fanad United, Letterkenny Rovers, Raphoe Town and Lagan Harps all having expressed an interest in adding Saturday League teams.

There were 12 teams in the 2022/23 Glencar Inn Division 1, which was won by Oldtown Celtic, following a last day win over title rivals Kildrum Tigers.

There was a titanic battle, too, in the Old Orchard Division 2, with St Catherine's pipping Fintown Harps to the crown, just two points between them when the curtain was dropped.

Across the Sunday and Saturday Divisions, there were 53 teams from 39 clubs competing last season.

“We will continue to grow the League,” Donegal League secretary Nigel Ferry told Friday's annual presentation function at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Letterkenny.

“It is up to the clubs to keep us going. We are going from strength to strength. We will speak with our referees and the various stakeholders to keep growing.”

Development works are continuing at Donegal League headquarters at the Diamond Park in Ballyare.

In total €750,000 has now been spent on upgrades with work to the car park set to begin next week.

The AGM of the Donegal Junior League takes place on Monday night next.
