New Finn Harps midfielder David Cawley says the initial aim for the club is to make an improvement on last season’s disappointing second-from-bottom First Division finish.

The former Sligo Rovers man - who won a Premier Division title at the Showgrounds back in 2012 - says the squad has got a good pre-season under their belts as they look forward to welcoming Derry City to Finn Park for a friendly encounter on Sunday.

“It’s been great so far,” he said. “The first couple of days we’ve eased ourselves in. It’s just nice to get a touch of a ball again.

“The off-season isn’t as long as it used to be but you still want to get back at it as soon as you can. The welcome has been great, even if a few of the younger lads are calling me the old fella!

“But there is a real want there as a group to improve. This is a new challenge for me but I’m looking forward to it.

“The First Division is a tough, tough league. But an improvement on last year will be a step forward.

“I want to stay injury free and play as many minutes as I can”.
