Lee Carsely is the name on Irish supporters' lips after the England under-21 head coach emerged as the frontrunner to land the Republic of Ireland job, according to reports.
The former Everton and Ireland midfielder leapfrogged ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon on the bookmakers' market over the weekend as the FAI look to decide on the position in the coming weeks.
The Boys in Green, who play Belgium and Switzerland at the Aviva Stadium in March, have been without a manager since November following Stephen Kenny's departure after last year's dismal Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
It has been reported that the FAI are in the latter stages of the appointment process and could have a name in place for the upcoming UEFA Nations League draw in Paris on February 8 - pending approval from the FAI board.
Birmingham-born Carsley has had an impressive club playing career - spanning over 15 years. Following spells at Everton, Derby, Coventry and Birmingham City, Carlsey retired from football in 2011.
After retirement, he had youth coaching roles with Coventry, Brentford, Manchester City and Birmingham City before gaining first-team management experience at three of those four clubs (bar Man City).
Carsley was appointed as head coach of the England under-20s in 2020 before being promoted to England under-21s in 2021. His most notable management achievement came at last summer's 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship when he guided England to success - defeating Spain 1-0 in the final.
He earned 40 caps during his international career and represented the Republic of Ireland at the 2002 World Cup. His final appearance in green came in an international friendly against Brazil in 2008.
16 years later, Carsley could lead the Boys in Green on the touchline if the FAI opt for the 49-year-old.
