Ballybofey United clinched the  Donegal League Division 2 League title on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Lifford Celtic in Dreenan and it’s all down to players, according to manager PH Bonar.

“They are a brilliant and committed bunch of players and the title is down to them and very little to do with me,” insisted Bonner afterwards.

Adam McCullough and Mark McGinty scored the goals for the champions while the first goal took a deflection off a Lifford defender after Lee White could only parry a Damian Glackin strike.

United claimed the title with two games still to play ahead of the chasing pack which included second placed Drumoghill and Lifford Celtic who are in third.

“We had won promotion a couple of weeks ago and it was great to get the title done and dusted with two games to play,” added Bonar.

“We got the first goal but Lifford scored the next two goals to lead 2-1. But we came out in the second half and the boys were brilliant and they blitzed Lifford for whom Lee White in goals was brilliant.

“Adam McCullough scored our second goal from out on the wing early in the second half and Mark McGinty came off the bench to score the third near the end.

“I felt in the first half they were a little nervous and tentative. I suppose it was down to the expectation that the title was on the line and there were a few more supporters than normal.

“But we were back to ourselves in the second half and played some very good football and deserving champions. We haven’t lost a game all year and had just one draw.

“It is all down to the players who set their minds on promotion after missing out on the promotion playoff last season. Promotion was the aim all year and to win the title is a bonus and a nice bonus.”
