League officials and clubs present at Monday's launch at Dry Arch Park
The Donegal Women’s League has launched a new Winter League.
The League was launched at Dry Arch Park, the home of Bonagee United, on Monday night.
The League will run on a seven-a-side format and officials are aiming to grow the venture into a successful summer league by gradually increasing both playing numbers and teams.
In 2024, the Donegal Women’s League’s senior league was down to just three competing clubs - Bonagee United, Letterkenny Rovers and Raphoe Town - but hopes are high that the new creation will create a spark.
FAI officials Brian Dorrian and Shane Barr attended the launch of the league, which aims to continue a pathway from underage leagues to adult football.
Ten clubs have entered the Winter League, including newcomers in the form of Cappry Rovers, Deele Harps and Kildrum Tigers, while there is also a return to adult-level football for the likes of Drumbar, Fanad, Finn Valley and Lagan.
A League spokesperson said: “Currently the Donegal Women’s League have large numbers playing in U8 to U16 and then there is a massive drop off.
“Some players pursue the avenue to National League which is a great achievement but this avenue may not be for some, and it is these players we want to keep playing whether it for fitness or social engagement.
“Both Shane Barr and Brian Dorrian complimented the league for the initiative in the fastest growing sport at the minute and wished them every success.
“The FAI officers have committed to supporting the league to encourage additional clubs in recruiting volunteers and organising training workshops, which hopefully will encourage more clubs to come on board.”
