Carndonagh FC returned to the pitch this weekend with heavy hearts, marking their first games since the tragic loss of club member, player, and friend Tiernan Doherty-Kelly.

The matches were steeped in poignant tributes, demonstrating the deep impact Kelly had on the club and the local football community.

Kelly died in a tragic road accident on December 1, and has been remembered as a lovely young man and a multi-talented footballer.

The 18-year-old died in a single-vehicle crash near Buncrana on the Inishowen Peninsula at 5am. He was the only occupant of the car.

Before kick-off in both senior and youth games, players observed a minute’s silence in his memory. All players wore black armbands as a symbol of respect and remembrance.

To honour Kelly further, a touching photo memory was created by Niall McGuinness, and a memorial plaque was donated by John and Maureen Taitt.

At the youth match against Gleneely Colts, an especially heartfelt moment unfolded. Players from both teams were led onto the field by their captains, carrying Kelly’s No. 8 jersey – a number he proudly wore during his time with the team.

Before the game, Gleneely Colts Captain Paul Doherty presented a memorial plaque to Carndonagh Youths Captain Dylan Cooke on behalf of the visiting club.

Carndonagh FC expressed their gratitude for the thoughtful gesture by Gleneely Colts.

“RIP Tiernan. You will never be forgotten,” the club stated.
