The Donegal league team of 2009
The Donegal Underage League (DUL) 2009 squad made the long journey to Eamonn Deacy Park, home of Galway City FC in what proved to be an unforgettable All-Ireland semi-final contest against the Tribesmen that saw the away side prevail on a 2-1 scoreline.
The match began with both sides cautiously assessing each other, though Donegal created the better chances early on. It was evident that Galway City were top-class opposition, setting the stage for a closely fought encounter.
After just 10 minutes, Galway took the lead against the run of play with a brilliantly placed corner kick. For many teams, conceding so early would have been a setback, but the resilient Donegal squad remained unfazed.
From that moment on, they took control of the game, and the Galway side struggled to cope with Donegal’s excellent football and unmatched work ethic.

Donegal dominated possession and created numerous chances but were unable to convert them. They also faced some robust challenges from the Galway defence, with Jamie Toland requiring treatment after being fouled off the ball.
Donegal, however, remained undeterred and continued to push for an equaliser. Their persistence paid off in the 22nd minute when Daithi McTaggart delivered a superb corner. Although initially cleared by Galway, the ball fell to McTaggart once again, and he sent in a pinpoint cross that was met by in-form striker Dillon Doherty, who expertly glanced a header into the net.
The game continued in the same vein, with Donegal dictating play and creating the majority of the chances. Galway, however, remained dangerous on the counterattack, but goalkeeper Lorcan Coyle was in fine form, dealing with every effort directed at him.
One of Donegal’s key strengths was Coyle’s precise distribution, which consistently troubled the Galway defence.
Galway emerged from the break with renewed energy and pressed Donegal hard. Although the visitors continued to create better opportunities, they could not capitalise.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Donegal captain Niall McBrearty suffered an injury and required treatment. McBrearty had been a constant threat to Galway, and his departure could have been a major setback, but his replacement, Adam Campbell, stepped up and ensured Donegal maintained their dominance.
Further changes saw Cian McMahon introduced in midfield, where he put in an outstanding display, while Jamie McMonagle replaced Lewis Cunea on the right wing and immediately caused problems for the Galway defence.
It must be said that this Donegal squad of 18 players is among the strongest the county has produced in recent years. Each player demonstrated versatility and commitment, a true testament to the squad’s depth and talent.
With the full-time whistle blowing at 1-1, tension was high as the match moved into extra time. The Donegal squad remained composed, believing they had done enough over the 80 minutes to earn their place in the final.
The first half of extra time passed with both sides battling hard, though Donegal’s superior fitness was evident, particularly in midfield, where Davin Kelly put in a tireless performance, covering every blade of grass.
The second half of extra time saw Donegal in complete control, with Drew Dowds epitomising determination — creating chances, chasing every loose ball, winning aerial duels, and pressing relentlessly.
With just two minutes remaining before penalties, Davin Kelly picked up the ball in midfield and surged toward the Galway defence.
The goalkeeper parried his shot, but Daithi McTaggart reacted quickest, using his close control to bypass a defender before slotting home the winning goal with little over a minute left on the clock. The Donegal bench erupted in celebration.
As Galway launched one final attack, the Donegal defence stood firm, ensuring their well-earned victory. When the final whistle blew, the relief and joy were palpable, with celebrations that could surely be heard back in Donegal.
The 2009 DUL squad now marches on to the All-Ireland Final. Donegal now prepares for an All-Ireland final in early March, set to take place in either Cork or Limerick.
