Donegal's Roma McLaughlin played a key role as Shelbourne secured the 2025 Women’s President’s Cup with a 2-1 victory over Athlone Town at Tolka Park.

Shelbourne, the FAI Cup holders, took control early, with McLaughlin posing a constant threat.

In the 14th minute, her initial efforts struck the crossbar before Aoibheann Clancy pounced on the rebound to fire home on her debut. The Reds continued to press, and just before half-time, a dangerous through ball from Lucy O’Rourke forced Athlone’s Kayleigh Shine into an unfortunate own goal, doubling Shelbourne’s lead.

Athlone struggled to break through Shelbourne’s well-organised defence but grew into the game in the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 74th minute when Kelly Brady was brought down in the box, and Roisin Molloy coolly slotted home the resulting penalty to reduce the deficit.

Despite late pressure from Athlone, Shelbourne managed the final stages well, maintaining possession and defending resolutely to secure their first Women’s President’s Cup triumph.

Both teams now turn their attention to the Women’s Premier Division opener next weekend, with Shelbourne hosting Shamrock Rovers and Athlone Town welcoming Wexford.

McLaughlin returned to Shelbourne at the start of 2024 having been with Fortuna Hjørring in Denmark last year.

Previously, McLaughlin was at Shels in 2017 and 2018 before spending four years at Central Connecticut State University. There, she won four North East Conference titles and was twice named NEC Midfielder of the Year.
