There were celebrations as Kilmacrennan Celtic opened their new pitch over the weekend at Joseph McGettigan Park.

The Lurgysiders hosted an official opening ceremony on Saturday, which was conducted by Fr Dinny McGettigan after festivities, including a Family Fun Day featuring a raffle, bouncy castle, face painting, delicious food, ice cream, and small-sided soccer games.

A match on the new pitch between a Kilmacrennan Select and a Finn Harps Select took place after.

The club took to social media to thank everyone for their help in organising the day, along with their support in attending.

“Today was a day for the future generation of Kilmacrennan footballers, from Academy age group right up to senior players, what a joy it was to showcase our talent and pride for Kilmacrennan Celtic FC.

“All the team at Kilmacrennan Celtic FC would like to thank each and every person for their support and well wishes at the Grand opening of the new pitch.

“We are deeply grateful to all the Kilmacrennan Community Development team for their unwavering support over the years to reach this stage of development. We would like to say a massive shout-out to Brendan McGinty and his team, Emmet McGinty, Raymond Shields, Hugo McDaid, John McGarvey, and Declan Doherty, for helping with the installation of the dressing rooms.

“Thank you to Peter Burke, Derek Hay, and Clive Boyce for keeping the pitches in great condition. Thank you to Liam O Hara, Electrician, for all his hard work. Thank you to Finn Harps FC for attending and for the kindness of their players as they took time to talk to fans, sign t-shirts and pose for photos.”

Families are warmly encouraged to come along for what promises to be a lovely evening. For the more competitive athletes, chip timing will be available, with prizes on offer across a range of categories.
