Emma Doherty scored twice on Saturday as Galway United defeated Waterford in the Women’s Premier Division.

The Buncrana woman netted two minutes into the second half top open the scoring in the 3-0 win at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Twelve minutes from the end, Doherty doubled the Galway lead before Amanda Smith notched a third in added time at the end.

“We started off a bit slow, but once we came in after half-time we tried to sort that out,” Doherty said afterwards.

“We reacted well and I got a brace - but I could have had a hat-trick. It’s three points so we’re happy out.”

Galway are third, six points off second-placed Shelbourne ahead of their final game of the season away to DLR Waves next weekend.

Paula McGrory scored one of the goals as Sligo Rovers lost 3-2 at home to DLR Waves.
