The Republic of Ireland’s U17 World Cup campaign in Qatar was ended at the hands of Switzerland on Tuesday.

Colin O’Brien’s side were defeated 3-1 in the last 16 match in the Aspire Zone in Doha after a scoreless first half.

Finn Harps trio Gavin McAteer from Milford, Donegal Town’s Josh Cullen and Corey Sheridan of Ballyshannon were all on the bench for the Irish side.

Ireland held on well against an impressive Switzerland in the first half, but Adrien Llukes opened the scoring just before the hour mark, while a super strike from substitute Sandro Wyss doubled their lead with 20 minutes to play.

Dundalk defender Vinnie Leonard, whose mother Jenny McGinley hails from Malinbeg in the southwest of the county, got one back on 82 minutes as he eventually got the ball over the line after a scramble from a couple of yards to give hope for the Irish.
