High-flying Sean Patton made his first appearance for the Republic of Ireland U-21s in their narrow 1-0 win away to Kazakhstan in the UEFA European Championship qualifiers.

Following a 1-1 draw at home to Moldova, Oisin Gallagher from Derry, who plays as a central midfielder for National League club Boston United on loan from EFL League One club Lincoln City, headed the only goal in the last minute.

Patton came on as a 66th-minute substitute to replace Tommy Lonergan from Waterford FC.

The victory moves Ireland within five points of second-placed Slovakia with three games to go, and they face the Slovaks away in a pivotal play-off clash in their next game in late September.

Drumkeen native Patton was recalled from a loan spell by Reading from Aldershot, who play in the National League, after five goals and an assist in six outings, in late February.

Since his return to League One Reading, the 19-year-old has made his first league start. A former student at St Eunan's College in Letterkenny, Patton has previously represented Ireland at Under-19 level.

The nine group winners and the best runner-up (not counting results against the sixth-placed team) qualify directly for the tournament. The remaining eight runners-up head for the play-offs.
