The LyIT team before a game against UUJ
Letterkenny Institute of Technology face TUS Midwest in Dublin this afternoon with a place in the Premier Division of the Colleges and Universities League (CUFL) up for grabs.
LyIT have been out of the top flight for the last decade, but Shane Byrne’s men have a chance to reach the top tier in today’s Division One semi-final (AUL Complex, 2pm)
“It’s been a while, too long, since LyIT were in the Premier Division,” Byrne told Donegal Live.
“Promotion is the big thing up for grabs in this game without a shadow of doubt.
“If we win, we’re up and it means that we could go into the final relaxed.”
A pre-Christmas 3-0 win over Dundalk Institute of Technology teed up today’s clash.
Joel Bradley-Walsh, Mark McFadden and Oran Brogan netted in that win.
In a big boost, Michael Harris returns to the LyIT squad today, the Convoy man and Derry City player having spent time on trial at several cross channel clubs, among them Celtic and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Liam Walsh remains out with a broken foot while a groin injury will prevent Stephen Doherty from being involved.
Adam McCaffrey, the young Finn Harps player who sustained a serious head injury in a Knockalla Cup game in December, is an absentee.
“There’s an opportunity for us,” Byrne said. “The semi-final is massive for us. If players are coming in and we want to attract them, being in the Premier Division could be the thing that sways them.”
LyIT face Cork IT on Friday in the cup with another Cup outing next Tuesday.
