South Donegal road ‘unlikely’ to receive required upgrade funding

Cllr Michael McMahon submitted question on N3 from Ballyshannon to Belleek
Donegal County Council has stated that the N3 Road from Ballyshannon to Belleek is “unlikely to receive the funding required to upgrade” but is being considered for a “possible safety scheme.”
Sinn Féin’s Cllr Michael McMahon submitted a question at September’s Donegal Municipal District meeting to the Area Manager for Roads and Transportation, Mark Sweeney, asking for the latest update on the road from Ballyshannon to Belleek.
A response signed off by Sweeney stated: “The road from Ballyshannon to Belleek is the N3 National Primary Road and, as such, any works apart from routine maintenance works are funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
“The need for road improvement and/or road realignment works to this road is included in the list of works that is discussed when the TII meet with representatives from Donegal County Council each year, but until these works are prioritised ahead of other works in National Roads within the County, this road is unlikely to receive the funding required to upgrade or realign this road.
“The Area Roads office has, however, carried out a Road Safety Assessment on a section of this road, and has submitted this to Central Technical Services to consider as a possible safety scheme.”
