Donegal town one way system is now imminent as contractor appointed
A contractor has been appointed to start work on a new one-way traffic system for south Donegal’s largest town, Donegal Town, relieving traffic coming onto and off the central Diamond area as well as facilitating further on street parking availability.
The news was welcomed today at the monthly meeting of the Donegal Municipal District, held at the Public Services Centre at Drumlonagher.
Acting area Manager for Roads and Transportation Mark Sweeney told councillors:
“The area office wishes to advise the members that a contractor has been appointed to carry out the works associated with the implementation of the Donegal Town One Way system.
"Arrangements are currently being made to have a pre-start meeting with the Contractor to discuss a start date and programme duration etc.
“Further information when known, will be provided on the Council social media platforms to inform the public of the works.”
The plans include a new one-way System onto Tir Chonaill Street, Castle Street, Water Street and New Row within the town which will essentially lead to the improvement of traffic flow and safety within the town.
The scheme will provide crossing points, new wider footpaths, widening of existing footpaths, landscaped pedestrian refuge islands and traffic calming.
Chair of the MD, Cllr Tom Conaghan (Ind.) said that many locals will need to keep an eye on the moves, which were imminent and that locals should inform themselves of the changes on the way, if they had not already done so.
“There has already been a huge amount of work done on this and maybe people do not realise the extent that this has been happening. It is to be welcomed.”
Cllr Micheál Naughton (FF) said that this was an important part of the continuing development of Donegal Town and that any short term inconvenience would be rewarded a much better traffic flow through the town.
Afterwards, Engineer Mark Sweeney re-affirmed to the press that the best way to keep up to date with all the plans for the new one way system work, during construction, was through Donegal County Council’s social media accounts.
