Donegal Town ‘Bank walk’ proposed extension land maps prepared

“An essential part of the fabric and structure of the town”

Bank Walk, Donegal Town

The popular Bank Walk in Donegal Town will have a survey carried out to see the areas of required refurbishment and maps have been drawn up regarding a walk extension

In calling for the immediate resurfacing works of the popular Bank Walk in Donegal Town to be carried out as well as the need to move forward with plans to extend the same walk, Cllr Tom Conaghan (Ind.) told members of the Municipal District at their September monthly meeting, that the walk was now an ingrained and invaluable part of the town’s amenities for locals and visitors.

He said that more and more people were using it than ever before on a weekly basis, and that older people were also using it on a much more frequent basis for exercise and recreation, than in the past.

“A lot of elderly people are using the Bank Walk and there are places where they might trip and fall and I am also thinking about buggies,” he explained afterwards.

He said that he was happy with the reply from the council both from the resurfacing request as well as calls for an extension to the walk, as it is “an essential part of the fabric and structure of the town”.

“It is, I think, the most popular walk in the town and with the greater focus on health and mental well being, I can safely say that it is one of the town’s greatest assets.”

Regarding proposals over what would be a huge welcome for an extension of the walk, he added:

“That means where the high bank is, where it is closed altogether, we are hoping to acquire land opposite it, which would take it round on a different part after you do the main walk and that would take you out on the Killybegs Road,” said Cllr Conaghan.

In his reply, at the meeting, Acting Area Manager for Roads and Transportation, Mark Sweeney confirmed that a survey to the existing walk was to be carried out and that land maps had been prepared regarding a proposed extension of the walk.

He told councillors: “The area roads office will survey the existing bank walk to determine the extent of any resurfacing works needed. We will revert to the Members when a cost estimate for these works has been prepared as funding will need to be sourced to facilitate any works necessary.

“The Donegal Town Bank Walk Options Selection Report has been completed and land maps have been prepared for the proposed extension to the Bank Walk.

Mr Sweeney added: “The next step is to commence discussions with the landowner with a view to acquiring the lands necessary to facilitate this walkway.

“Thereafter, we intend forwarding this information on to the Community & Enterprise Section to progress the project through Part 8 planning and to try to secure the necessary funding to deliver the project.”
