Anthony Glavin first came to Ireland in 1974, where he lived in Donegal for many years
Way Out West, the latest novel from Dublin-based, Boston-born writer Anthony Glavin will be launched in Oideas Gael, Gleann Cholm Cille, from 6.30–8.00pm on Saturday, March 16.
Gerry Moriarty, former Northern Editor of The Irish Times and former Donegal Democrat journalist, will officially launch the book.
Speaking about the launch, founder of Oideas Gael Liam Ó Cuinneagáin said: “Anthony was resident in Caiseal village, next door to Oideas Gael, for many years and we hope that the local community will join him in celebrating not only his latest book but a lifetime of literary work. Beidh fáilte roimh chách ar an oíche.”
Way Out West is described as a gentle coming-of-age story that will enthral with its texture and world-building, the many delicately and affectionately observed characters and its subtle reflections on trauma, loss and a hope that somehow renews. It tells the story of Fintan Doherty’s childhood in Donegal and his later nomadic existence as an emigrant in the United States.
Anthony Glavin first came to Ireland in 1974, where he lived in Donegal for many years. One of Ireland’s foremost literary editors, he succeeded David Marcus as editor of ‘New Irish Writing’ in The Irish Press in 1987 and worked as a commissioning editor for New Island from 1994 to 2004, for whom he edited, among many titles, Nuala Ó Faoláin’s Are You Somebody?—The Accidental Memoir of a Dublin Woman, which went on to sell over a million copies worldwide. Anthony’s work has drawn praise from other writers such as Roddy Doyle, Colm Tóibín and Joseph O’Connor.
His first story collection One for Sorrow was released in 1980 and Way Out West is his fifth published book. His short stories have been published and anthologised in numerous collections.
Other essays, articles, columns and reviews were published in The Irish Times, Irish Independent, Sunday Business Post, Sunday Independent, The Irish Mail, Sunday Tribune, Irish Press, Donegal Democrat, and Cara Magazine, as well as the Christian Science Monitor and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He has contributed to RTÉ Radio One’s Sunday Miscellany for twenty years, as well as The Sunday Show, The Pat Kenny Show, The John Creedon Show and other broadcast media.
Way Out West is published by New Island and is available in all good bookshops from March 15. It can be purchased online or in person at An Siopa Gaeilge, Oideas Gael, Gleann Cholm Cille.
