Cully Coders from Donegal Town take top prize at Galway Lego tournament

The Cully Coders from the Moyne Ulster-Scots Association Donegal Town also scored the highest in the Robot Game competition and will be travelling to Dublin next month to compete in the Ireland final

The Cully Coders from Moyne Ulster-Scots Association Donegal Town took the top prize at the first Lego League Submerged tournament, which took place in The Connacht Hotel, Galway.  

They also scored the highest in the Robot Game competition and will be travelling to Dublin next month to compete in the Ireland final.

They were joined on the winner’s podium by SAC Sharks from St. Andrew’s College from Stillorgan, Co Dublin, who won the trophy for their Robot Design, Aqua Guardians from Balla Secondary School from Castlebar, Co Mayo who won the Innovation Project Award and SK Sharkblox from FutureFocus21C (Cahersiveen, Co Kerry) who won for their Core Values.  Nano Knights from Mountrath Community School (Mountrath, Co Laois) were also recognised with the Motive Award.

Heats of the hands-on robotics and problem-solving programme are taking place throughout Ireland, with teams of children, aged 10 to 16, learning to think creatively, like scientists and engineers.

The fun challenges involve a robot game and a research project, and this year’s theme will see LEGO® technology used to explore the layers of the ocean, bringing fresh ideas to the surface as students ‘sea’ into the future!

Teams will use technical and collaborative skills to explore life beneath the ocean waves in one of the planet’s most complex ecosystems.

First Lego League participation is tailored to three age sections, from early years learning to Transition Year students, with robot games and activities suited to each level.
