Edeninfagh National School students winners in national art competition

Edeninfagh National School in Glenties have been announced as winners in the National Gallery of Ireland Jack B. Yeats Schools competition. 

SN Éadan Fhionnfhraoich won the Ulster Primary School category for its artwork “Doors – Portals of Transportation, Memories and Time.” Eight winning schools will each receive an exciting prize package worth €1000. The competition was supported by Key Capital.

The National Gallery of Ireland made the announcement recently.

To celebrate its landmark exhibition Jack B. Yeats: Painting & Memory, the National Gallery of Ireland devised this art competition for primary and post-primary schools on the island of Ireland. Championing the diverse communities of Ireland, it offered schools the opportunity to engage more deeply with the themes of place and memory in the work of iconic Irish artist Jack B. Yeats.

Schools were invited to work as a team to create a collaborative artwork inspired by the memories of people in their local area. Each school could choose to create their artwork in any form. The finished artwork was photographed and submitted digitally to the gallery for judging. 

A teacher from the school said: "A door or doorway symbolises the transition and passageway from one place to another. Our pupils could see similar elements of this in Jack B. Yeats’s work. We are situated in one of the most scenic parts of the world.

"Unfortunately, the population has declined over recent years and the only lasting memories are the abandoned houses.  At first glance, a door is just a piece of wood, glass or metal, but in the hands of an artist, a door/doorway represents a world of possibility or an abundance of history.  Who was the first person to walk through that door?  Who was the last?  If a door could tell stories, what would they be?”
