Investment needed in Meenacladdy water pipes as another pipe bursts

Water pipes burst in Meenacladdy regularly

Calls have been made for an emergency meeting to be held with Uisce Éireann following yet another burst water pipe in the Meenacladdy area.

Residents in the Meenacladdy experience difficulty due to water pipes on an ongoing basis. The area is one that is home to tourists and Irish language students during the summer months and many depend heavily on having a dependable source of water.

Residents in the area were without water last night and this morning.

This morning Sinn Féin Councillor John Shéamais Ó Fearraigh said that he would be asking his colleague, the Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District to call for an emergency meeting with Uisce Éireann to discuss the ongoing problem.

Councillor John Séamus Ó Fearraigh says that that area needs proper investment: "For the last number of years the water pipes burst in the area. It seems there is deterioration."

A few hundred people live in the area.

"It seems to be old asbestos pipes that are in the area and these pipes need replaced. They are in for the last forty years. The people in the area are being impacted regularly. I am calling on the Cathoirleach of the Glenties Municipal Area, Councillor Michael McClafferty to call for an emergency meeting with Uisce Éireann because we simply can't allow this to continue. This area needs investment," he said.
