Don the green and come along to Dunkineely's first St Patrck's Day parade

Dunkineely is gearing up for its first St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Celebrations will take place not on St Patrick’s Day itself, but on Saturday, March 18 at 3pm.

A spokesperson said: “We hope to have a great parade, with floats, bands, bikes and cars, plus much more entertainment going on in the town.

“If you want to join the parade, all floats, clubs and businesses are welcome. We also need volunteers to help on the day.”

Anyone who wishes to enter a float or to volunteer can email dunkineelycommunity@gmail.com.

Floats and participants will meet at 2.30pm at the GAA Naomh Ultan carpark. And there will be a prize for the best float on the day. 

March 18 is known as Sheelagh’s Day. Traditionally, Sheelagh’s Day was celebrated the day after the Feast of St Patrick and coincided with the Christian festivities.

According to Irish folklore and mythology, Sheelagh was either the wife or mother of St  Patrick, and the holiday served to commemorate her life.

Last year’s Killaghtee Festival showed just how strong the community spirit is in the parish which takes in Dunkineely, Bruckless and surrounding areas. This celebration of Patrick and Sheelagh on March 18 is sure to be another great day to remember for all involved.
