The Gay Byrne trials to be launched as part of Mary from Dungloe festival

Gay Byrne enjoyed holidays in Dungloe with his wife and family

The Gay Byrne walking trails which will be launched on Friday July 28 at the Gweebarra Bridge are being introduced this year as part of the Mary from Dungloe Arts Festival.

Festival organisers introduced the trails in association with Donegal County Council.

This trail is the first phase of a breathtaking journey through the Rosses, an area which was cherished by the late RTÉ broadcaster Gay Byrne and his dear wife Kathleen. The couple and their close friends found endless joy strolling the hills and Atlantic Coastline in the Dungloe area where the Late, Late presenter enjoyed breaks with his family in their holiday home.

In November, 2019, the 85-year-old TV and radio legendary presenter passed away in his Dublin home after a long battle with prostate cancer.

The Gay Byrne trails offer 7 unique routes, ranging from 14.5km walk/cycleway along the new N56 to a challenging 39km expedition along the Atlantic Coastline, showcasing the stunning estuary, Dooey, Druimnaduid, Marameelan, Falmore, and Maghery.

Festival organisers and council officials would like people to join them for the official launch at 12 noon, where Kathleen and family will kick off the celebrations with a delightful 4.5km walk along the Gweebarra Estuary, followed by refreshing treats at McCready’s on the Green.

All walkers and cyclists are warmly invited to be a part of this memorable event. People are being asked to wear a high-viz Vest and appropriate footwear and gear for the weather.
