In their first ever appearance at the World Cup finals, Jack Charlton's side reached the quarter-finals before going to eventually 1-0 to hosts Italy, with Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci scoring the only goal at the Stadio Olmypico in Rome.

The came following the nerve-jangling last 16 penalty shootout win over Romania in Genoa, where Donegal's finest Bonner saved a penalty from Daniel Timofte before the nation held its breath as David O'Leary slotted home the winning spot kick. McCarthy was the captain of the team, with Cascarino starting the opening two games at centre-forward and Sheedy scoring Ireland's first ever goal at the World Cup finals in the 1-1 draw with England.
