Donegal's first Ulster title of 1972 - like a Phoenix from the Flame

Peter Campbell speaks to team manager Brian McEniff to mark Donegal's great breakthrough in winning their first Ulster SFC 50 years ago this weekend and details on a player-by-player basis those who helped make the achievement possible

Martin Carney (Aodh Ruadh)
I had Martin Carney as a minor when I was team manager in 1969. He had been a sub on the St Joseph's team the year before when we won the All-Ireland club. He was born in the West End, Bundoran where is father Owen Carney then lived. Owen would have taught me to play table tennis.

Carney was an unreal talent with his long hair. We used to call him Mop Head. He was a great scoretaker, a superstar of his time. He had a goal disallowed in the All-Ireland semi-final against Offaly. Now in Mayo, he still has a great grá for Donegal; he was a great friend of the late Elvis (PJ Ferguson). It was very sad when he went to Mayo and I did my best to get him to stay. I also tried to get him back in 1983.

Apart from the Ulster titles in 1972 and '74, he went on to win four Connacht titles with Mayo and managed the Mayo minors before becoming an analyst with RTE.
