Donegal's first Ulster title of 1972 - like a Phoenix from the Flame

Peter Campbell speaks to team manager Brian McEniff to mark Donegal's great breakthrough in winning their first Ulster SFC 50 years ago this weekend and details on a player-by-player basis those who helped make the achievement possible

Donal Monaghan (Four Masters)
Donal had been in the Donegal team in 1969 when we played Offaly in the league semi-final in Croke Park. He had a bad game that day and went out of contention. I had saw him play with Four Masters at junior level in 1965 and '66 and always knew he would be good. He had very good hands and was a safe defender.

Enda Bonner had come in at right full-back in 1971 and did well, but I saw Donal when we played against Clanna Gael in 1971 and he played very, very well. He came back in and it helped that he was based at home. Went on to win an All-Star in 1974 and was part of Tom Conaghan's backroom team when Donegal won the All-Ireland U-21 in 1982.
He also was still playing and captained Four Masters to a Donegal senior title in 1982 and has contributed greatly to his home club. Sadly passed away in 2016.
