John Boyce (Downings)
I decided to run trials for the Donegal team in 1972 in the early part of the year. I spotted John Boyce in one of those trials and noticed that he was a great man marker. With us playing Down in the first round of the championship, I fancied him for a position at corner-back and he filled in very, very well.
He played in the Ulster final but lost his place for the All-Ireland semi-final. It was a tough call with three men vying for the position, John, Andy Curran and Ray Sheerin, and was probably unfortunate to lose out. He was quite an accomplished golfer as well and continued to play for Downings for many years and still lives there.
