Donegal's first Ulster title of 1972 - like a Phoenix from the Flame

Peter Campbell speaks to team manager Brian McEniff to mark Donegal's great breakthrough in winning their first Ulster SFC 50 years ago this weekend and details on a player-by-player basis those who helped make the achievement possible

Anthony Gallagher (St Eunan's)
Anthony Gallagher was a recognised midfielder but we had a problem at centre half-back and we converted him to be a No 6 through necessity. After his secondary education, Anthony went to work in the bank, but then went off to England to train as a physical education teacher.

When he came home he was a great help to us as he had new methods of training that we had never seen. Anthony was a very, very good footballer, read the game well and covered the middle very well. He never really pushed forward that much. He played particularly well in the All-Ireland semi-final in 1972 against Offaly. A really accomplished footballer and a good leader. Anthony was on three St Eunan's teams to win senior club championships before transferring to Bryansford when he went to teach in Kilkeel. He won a Down League, Down championship and an All-Ireland Sevens with Bryansford before returning to help St Eunan's to another Donegal senior title in 1983.

I got him back for a short time in 1980 when I came back in but it didn't work out because of travelling. Came back to teach in Ballygawley and still lives there.
