Donegal's first Ulster title of 1972 - like a Phoenix from the Flame

Peter Campbell speaks to team manager Brian McEniff to mark Donegal's great breakthrough in winning their first Ulster SFC 50 years ago this weekend and details on a player-by-player basis those who helped make the achievement possible

Anton Carroll, Frankie McFeely and myself were the same age. Indeed Anton transferred to Bundoran to work for a summer in 1961 and was due to play in a minor championship final only for getting sent off in a club game the week before in Ballyshannon. A tough, uncompromising footballer, he gave his all when he was on the field. Was also very good at athletics and was a Colleges champion at high jump and long jump. He came back from the US to run the line for me in the 1974 Ulster championship.

He was around when there were lean times for Gaoth Dobhair but Anton was a bit like myself, had boots, would travel and would play for anybody. Anton Carroll, Frank McFeely, myself of an age. Transferred to Bundoran in 1961, due to play in minor championship, got sent off in Ballyshannon. Tough, uncompromising footballer, gave his all. Very athletic. Colleges champion at high jump, long jump. On line in '74 when he was injured. Won Ulster U-21 titles in 1963 and '64 and a Sigerson Cup medal in 1968. Now living in Dublin.
