Gardai probe Halloween incidents in Carndonagh

There are calls for a public meeting in Carndonagh after incidents of criminal damage on Halloween night.

A group of youths turned a van on its side in one incident while a woman was left frightened when a window in her car was broken earlier in the night.

Other motorists were startled with several reporting that fireworks were thrown at their vehicles.

In a video that has been circulated on social media, a handful of youths can be seen rocking a parked van, bearing the name of an Inishowen-based company, before flipping it onto its side. Laughter is audible during the 10-second clip before a larger group of up to a dozen are seen running off.

“Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage that occurred on Station Road, Carndonagh on Tuesday 31st October, 2023 at approximately 11.30pm,” a Garda spokesperson told Donegal Live.

Earlier in the evening, a passenger-side windscreen of a vehicle was broken when an object was thrown. A young baby was in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that officers are probing an incident of criminal damage which occurred on Chapel Street, Carndonagh, at around 7.30pm on Tuesday.

The spokesperson added that investigations in the matters are ‘ongoing’.

“The behaviour of those involved is not in keeping with the spirit of Halloween, nor what the residents of our town and businesses should have to endure,” Carndonagh-based Sinn Féin County Councillor Albert Doherty said.

Councillor Doherty said he has visited businesses premies and also spoken to concerned residents in the locality.

He said: “We are very lucky that no one was seriously hurt or injured on the night. I have spoken to the Garda authorities and called for an early meeting with Carndonagh traders and residents.”
