A juvenile male charged with a serious assault in Letterkenny has been remanded in custody.

The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Letterkenny District Court.

He is charged with assaulting a man and causing him harm at a location in the Letterkenny area in March 2026.

The accused appeared before Judge Emile Daly via video link from the Oberstown Children Detention Campus in Dublin.

He is charged with an offence contrary to section 3 (1) and 3 (2) of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997 (as amended by section 20 of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2023).

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that a file has been sent to the Garda Youth Diversion Office (GYDO) and has been approved.

That file has since been passed onto the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and directions are expected “quite soon”, Sergeant Collins said.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for the accused juvenile, said that his client would be subject of a bail application in the High Court and added that the charge against him is “relatively new”.

Sergeant Collins said he would push hard to get directions in the matter.

Judge Daly told the boy that his next appearance would be via video link if bail is refused, but said he was to be present in court if bail is granted.
