Donegal Town has achieved its best result in the SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition in more than 20 years, winning a silver medal in the 2026 awards with a score of 395 marks.

The result represents an improvement of 20 marks on last year, when the town received a bronze medal, and has been welcomed by the Donegal Town Tidy Towns committee as recognition of the efforts of volunteers and the wider community.

The committee thanked its members, volunteers, CE, RSS and TUS workers, local businesses, schools and community partners for their contribution to keeping the town looking its best throughout the year.

In welcoming the result, the committee said the judges had described Donegal Town as spotless and litter-free during their visit.

Among the features singled out for praise were the Sleeping Giant wood carving at the Bank Walk, the new flowerpots and mural at New Row, and the introduction of bee-friendly flowers around the town. The judges also noted sustainability initiatives undertaken by local schools, particularly Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala.

The committee said the award reflected the strong community spirit in Donegal Town, with considerable work taking place behind the scenes, from regular litter-picking to planting and maintaining flowers throughout the year.It has thanked everyone who contributed to the achievement and encouraged the community to maintain the momentum ahead of the 2027 competition.

The committee also congratulated neighbouring communities on their success, particularly Buncrana, named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town, and Carrigart, which received the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Gaeltacht Town.
