Expansion of Irish Language Assistant Scheme to Donegal Town school

Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí recently moved to a new school building

Glór na nGael has announced that Scéim na gCúntóirí Teanga (the language assistants scheme) will be expanded to include Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí in Donegal Town from January 2026.

The move has been approved by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, with Glór na nGael beginning preparations to launch the recruitment process in the coming months.

The scheme, first introduced in 2023, is already supporting 16 Irish-medium schools across Gaeltacht Service Towns and Líonraí Gaeilge towns. Two Donegal schools – Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin and Coláiste Ailigh in Letterkenny – are already part of the initiative, and the addition of Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí will further strengthen support for Irish in the county.

Scheme administrator Niamh Ní Mhóra said the aim is to give pupils greater opportunities to acquire and enrich the language:

“It is very welcome news that this support will now be available in Donegal Town, building on the success of the scheme in Letterkenny. The focus is on giving young people meaningful opportunities to use Irish, both inside and outside the classroom.”

Recruitment for the new assistant post will take place in partnership with the school, with the successful candidate expected to take up the role in early 2026.

Glór na nGael continues to work in three key areas: promoting Irish in families, supporting community groups, and encouraging the use of Irish in enterprise and business.

Scéim na gCúntóirí Teanga á leathnú amach go Cathair Chorcaí agus Baile Dhún na nGall

Tá áthas ar Ghlór na nGael a fhógairt go mbeidh Scéim na gCúntóirí Teanga á leathnú amach anois chuig trí scoil déag i gCathair Chorcaí agus Baile Dhún na nGall ó mhí Eanáir seo chugainn.

Tá leathnú na scéime ceadaithe ag An Roinn Forbartha Tuaithe agus Pobail agus Gaeltachta agus beidh Glór na nGael ag tabhairt faoi na hullmhúcháin le tús a chur leis an bpróiseas earcaíochta.

Dúirt riarthóir na scéime, Niamh Ní Mhóra, go bhfuil 16 scoil lánGhaeilge i mBailte Seirbhíse Gaeltachta agus i mbailte Líonraí Gaeilge atá aitheanta faoin bpróiseas pleanála teanga ag baint tairbhe as an scéim ó seoladh í i 2023.

"Is é cuspóir na scéime tacú leis na scoileanna deiseanna breise a chur ar fáil do dhaltaí chun an teanga a shealbhú agus a shaibhriú, agus is cinnte gur dea-scéala é go mbeidh an tacaíocht seo ar fáil anois do na 13 scoileanna i gCathair Chorcaí agus Baile Dhún na nGall," a dúirt Ní Mhóra.

Is iad na scoileanna a mbeidh mar chuid den scéim ó Mhí Eanáir 2026; Baile Dhún na nGall - Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí, (ag cur leis an dá scoil i nDún na nGall atá ag fáil na seirbhíse cheana féin: Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin agus Coláiste Ailigh i Leitir Ceanainn) Cathair Chorcaí - Gaelscoil Mhachan, Gaelscoil an Chaisleáin, Gaelscoil an Teaghlaigh Naofa, Gaelscoil Uí Riada, Gaelscoil Pheig Sayers, Gaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn, Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil, Scoil an Athar Tadhg Ó Murchú, Gaelscoil Uí Ríordáin, Coláiste Daibhéid, Coláiste an Phiarsaigh agus Gaelcholáiste Mhuire.

Cuirfear tús leis an bpróiseas earcaíochta a luaithe agus is féidir i gcomhar leis na scoileanna. Tá freagracht ar leith ag Glór na nGael i dtrí réimse oibre, forbairt na Gaeilge sa teaghlach, forbairt na Gaeilge i measc grúpaí pobail agus forbairt na Gaeilge i measc grúpaí fiontraíochta agus gnó.
