Local elections: Ó Fearraigh, McGee and Carr drive over the line in Glentes LEA

John Shéamais Ó Fearraigh, Denis McGee and Brian Carr were elected on the tenth and final count in the Glenties electoral area on Sunday night.

It was approaching 11.30pm in the Highlands Hotel when the returning officer, Paddy Doherty, took to the stage for the final time.

The six-seater constituency was a race to the wire, but there were scenes of jubilation as the confirmation came.

Ó Fearraigh (Sinn Fein), McGee (100% Redress) and Carr (Sinn Fein) got the nods on the distribution of Kellie Rodgers' 1,154 votes following her elimination on the ninth count.

With 346 of those passing to Ó Fearraigh, the sitting Sinn Fein representative retained his seat with Carr collecting 229 transfers to pass the quota.

Carr was co-opted onto Donegal County Council ten weeks ago after Marie Therese Gallagher stepped down from her seat.

The votes of Rodgers, a third Sinn Fein candidate in the area, were key in seeing her party colleagues stave off independent candidate Jonathan Stewart.

McGee's ascension to Lifford means that four councillors from the 100% Redress Party will take their seats on Donegal County Council. McGee will join Joy Beard, Ali Farren and Tomas Sean Devine when the new council convenes for the first time.
