Donegal don't nessessarily want to win the NFL but would they like an extra game, a competitive one at Croke Park against a championship rival? The answer to that would be yes.
Donegal want games
The question shouldn’t be, are Donegal interested in winning the NFL Division 1 title? But if Jim McGuinness was pressed on whether he’d like the extra run-out making a final would present, he’d say yes.
Victory against Andy Moran’s visitors to O’Donnell Park at the weekend would present Donegal with real breathing space and, at the same time, real scope.
Some pundits seem to have developed amnesia in weeks when looking back at the exact reason why Donegal deliberately tailed off when reaching the magical six-point mark in 2025.
Donegal didn’t “disrespect” the league last season. With just a week between a possible final appearance and an opening Ulster SFC opener with Derry, McGuinness was forced to cut his cloth.
This time out, that won’t be an issue. McGuinness will continue to look to win games and if that means they reach the decider, the reward on offer won’t just be a medal but one final opportunity to run the rule over his championship options.
