Seven things we've learned from Donegal's National League approach so far

Donegal don't nessessarily want to win the NFL but would they like an extra game, a competitive one at Croke Park against a championship rival? The answer to that would be yes.

We might have a contest for the No 1 jersey

I still believe Shaun Patton is Donegal’s established first-choice goalkeeper. What he can do from his restarts borders on unique.

But Gavin Mulreany has certainly gained real confidence with his recent run of games between the posts.

Whenever Patton does come back into the reckoning, he’ll go right back into the team. But if and when Donegal do call on Mulreany again, in championship, the St Naul’s man won’t be fazed.

Last term, he’d a difficult time when sprung, particularly against Tyrone in Ballybofey in the All-Ireland series.

But he now offers Donegal a genuinely different skill set. His free-taking from distance has been almost flawless and, as the weather improves, so too, you’d imagine, will his range and distance.

He can restart off his left or right foot too, which will give Jim McGuinness and his management even more food for thought.
