Killybegs' Niall Erskine was defeated in his bid to become GAA president as former Armagh captain Jarlath Burns won the vote to take over from Larry McCarthy next year.

Burns beat off competition from Erskine and Pat Teehan from Offaly at the GAA's Annual Congress 2023 at Croke Park in Dublin.

With 158 of the 277 votes in the first ballot, which exceeded the quota by 19, Burns was declared the victor with Teehan picking up 70 and Erskine 49.

Chairperson of the World Council, Erskine has been a Trustee of the GAA, Central Council Delegate for Donegal and is a former Assistant Secretary and Secretary of London GAA and was Club Development Officer of CLG Na Cealla Beaga. Burns will take off next February.
