Glenswilly came good in the final quarter against Dungloe to win for their eighth time on the bounce in Division 2 of the All-County Football League.
Glenswilly 0-14 Dungloe 0-10
The home side weren’t in front at any stage until the 45th minute when Jack Gallagher stroked them into a 0-10 to 0-9 lead and from there, there was no turning back, with Michael Murphy dropping into centre-back and then full-back to shore it up.
The former Donegal captain scored six points in all. His experience was vitally important in continuing this team’s flawless start to the campaign, with a fixture against the only other 100 percenters in the county, Naomh Columba, up next.
Dungloe contributed plenty to a well-contested game and could take plenty from most of their afternoon’s work, perhaps the disappointing thing being their tailing off near the end.
Dessie Gallagher’s side certainly bit the ground running, with three points inside of two minutes, with Ryan Greene scoring twice and Daire Gallagher also on the mark. There was a crispness to the visitors’ attacks and they would lead 0-5 to 0-2 by the 11th minute, with Gallagher and a fine Oisin Bonner free making up their total. Dungloe were aggressively pressing on Cathal Gallagher’s kick-outs.
Glenswilly’s first two scores came from a free and a mark by Murphy and although chasing for most of the first half, Murphy’s third point made it 0-7 apiece at the break. In between times, Cormac Callaghan, Caoimhin Marley, twice, and Christopher McMonagle all scored, as did Dungloe’s Ryan Connors and Barry Curran.
Like the first, the second opened with Dungloe pushing and they moved 0-9 to 0-7 in front through Conor O’Donnell and Gallagher scores. But with Murphy’s brace levelling it and Jack Gallagher forcing the lead for Glenswilly, it was they who seized the initiative. Callaghan, Murphy and another two from Marley saw them home, with Dungloe’s only score in the last 25 minutes - having kicked six wides in the second half to just the one in the first - coming from Connors. Ryan Greene was sent off for a second yellow with seconds to play.
