A Laghey resident was convicted and fined €250 for being the driver of an uninsured vehicle, after Donegal District Court was told his brother had missed a lift to a Debs function he was due to attend.
Edward John Britton, 25, of Boat House, Mullinvale, Laghey, Donegal, was convicted after being found on July 23, 2025, at the N15 at Laghey, Donegal, of being the user of a vehicle without an approved policy of insurance as required by Part VI of the Road Traffic Act, 1968, as amended.
It was found he was contrary to Section 56 (1)&(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961, as amended by Section 18 of the Road Traffic Act 2006.
Britton’s solicitor, Francis Gillespie, said at Ballyshannon Courthouse: “The vehicle in question had broken down approximately 16 months previously.

“On the night, his brother had been due to attend a Debs function, and he missed his lift.
“My client is 25 years old and is a single man. His line of work is approximately 10km away, and he needs his licence to work.”
The court heard that Britton had no previous convictions.
Judge Éiteáin Cunningham, convicted Britton and fined him €250 with four months to pay. The Judge did not issue Britton a driving disqualification.
