Gaeil Leitir Ceannain U-16 Girls celebrate their victory in Burt

The Gaeil Leitir Ceannain U-16 Girls were crowned County Champions when they defeated Naomh Padraig Uisce Chaoin in the Division 3 League final in Burt.

A large crowd gathered in Burt in what was a greatly anticipated final.  Both teams performed well in their respective groups and the final was delayed to allow girls time to sit the junior certificate.  However, there were no signs of any rustiness as both teams delivered a high standard of entertaining football for the watching crowd.

The Gaels girls took an early lead with two well-taken goals from Aileen Sweeney.  Mia McMonagle added two points with Naomh Padraig scoring 1-4 in return.  Gaeil Leitir Ceannain led 3-4 to 1-4 at the break after further points from Aileen Sweeney, Alannah Ward and a great individual goal from Jade Gallagher.

Naomh Padraig came out fighting in the second half but the Letterkenny side held strong.  They increased their lead with points from Sarah Henry, Anna Sweeney, Niamh McLaughlin and a brace from Aileen Sweeney.  Naomh Padraig added a further three points and the game finished 3-10 to 1-7 to Gaeil Leitir Ceannain.

After receiving the cup from Catriona Sweeney, joint Captains Emily Crossan and Caoimhe Patton thanked Naomh Padraig for a competitive game, the referee Clint Marron and his officials, the team coaches and the travelling supporters. Gaeil Leitir Ceannain would like to acknowledge Healthwise Pharmacy Group as the Corporate Sponsor of Girls Football Academy.
