Michael Hegarty watches on as Naomh Ultan are defeated by St Mary's, Convoy.
It’s a big step from the blue and gold of his native Kilcar to the yellow and black of Naomh Ultan - but that is where Michael Hegarty finds himself these days.
His son Jack is only 17 and already a fine prospect, and will be playing senior next year in a young side that suffered a 3-17 to 1-9 Junior A Championship defeat away to St Mary’s, Convoy on Saturday.
As well as being a part of the Dunkineely squad, the former Donegal star is also part of the senior side’s backroom team. He says Naomh Ultan simply have to dust themselves down and look forward to a home quarter-final clash with Naomh Padraig, Uisce Chaoin.
“Convoy have a lot of quality and you would know that they had been playing in Division 2 not all that long ago.
“They are a big and physical team, but they play a good brand of football. They were a level or two above us today.
“Our boys just did not get going there but we have a home quarter-final against Muff to look forward to”.
Hegarty admitted that Naomh Ultan came with a “bit of a buzz” after winning three games on the trot but the weekend’s loss was a bit of a reality check.
“We were coming to win the game even though the pressure was off us, but we found out that as the game developed, Convoy were at the pitch of it and we were not.
Hegarty said his side had a few chances of goals which may have put a different complexion on this one-sided affair.
He was also named on the subs bench but the veteran is more concerned about the younger players getting game time and valuable experience.
“I played a few minutes in the games, but it is good to get the young lads out there and it is far more of benefit to themselves and the clubs than me coming on.
“I’m living in Dunkineely and I have helped out with these lads at underage level and they are very good lads. They do everything they are asked. We do have some good young potential in the club.
“It is about developing the lads who are very young, and they have loads of time”.
