Tonight's final games will decide the four semi-finalists with Donegal's hopes of a last four place in the hands of others

The Dr McKenna Cup permutations: Here's how Donegal can qualify for semi-final

Ah, the joy of permutations in the final round of the Dr McKenna Cup.

It should have been straight forward with Donegal winning their two games and topping Group A. But alas, a slip on the Donegal side  about the eligibility of young Finbarr Roarty has thrown the cat among the pigeons.

Just look at the tables below. Despite lining out on January 3rd in Ballybofey and on Sunday last in Omagh, Donegal are credited with playing just one game and their score difference is +2. Game v Armagh has been erased from the records! Donegal won by 16 points, allegedly! Without even an objection from Armagh!

According to Ulster GAA table, Armagh have no games played! Tyrone have one and are -2.

Donegal need Tyrone to draw or defeat Armagh to top the group, as they have the head to head on Tyrone.

If Armagh win by three points then Donegal will be into the shake-up for the best runner-up place in semi-finals.

That’s when it gets really complicated.

In Section B Derry are through to the semi-final with two wins. Down and Cavan meet tonight in Newry and both have a chance of getting the best runner-up spot. In order to match Donegal’s +2 score difference, Down need to win by five points while Cavan need to win by four. Matching Donegal’s +2 will be enough as they will have scored more (thanks to having two games recorded).

Then on to Section C where Fermanagh and Monaghan have one win each from their opening game and they meet in Brewster Park, Enniskillen tonight where the winner will be automatically into the semi-final. A draw would see both into the semi-finals with Monaghan as winners with better score difference.

Donegal will be hoping here for a Monaghan win, which would eliminate Fermanagh from the race for the best runner-up position. But to complicate matters further, if Fermanagh win, then Donegal would be hoping that they win by at least four points to reduce the Monaghan score difference of +5.

I need to lie down after that!
