Donegal’s 2012 All-Ireland winner Mark McHugh has joined Galway club Moycullen as a coach ahead of the 2024 season.

The Kilcar native and All-Star winner was previously showcased as part of Davy Burke’s management team in Roscommon last year. However, McHugh regrettably had to part ways with the Roscommon setup in November due to logistical constraints stemming from travel commitments.

McHugh's coaching prowess extends beyond senior level, having previously served as a coach for the Fermanagh minors. Additionally, his tenure with Maxi Curran's coaching side witnessed notable achievements, including reaching the LGFA All-Ireland semi-final and Division 1 League final in 2022.

According to a report by Maurice Brosnan in the Irish Examiner, McHugh's ties to Galway run deep, having attended university in the area and maintaining weekly travel for work commitments. It also states that despite his involvement with Moycullen, McHugh remains committed to representing his home club, Kilcar, on the field during the 2024 season.

Moycullen expressed enthusiasm regarding McHugh's addition to their coaching setup, highlighting his potential to bring valuable insights and expertise to the team throughout the year.

“He will be helping us out when he can throughout the season,” the club said in a statement. “We feel that he will really bring something extra to the group throughout the year.”

Notably, Moycullen enjoyed success in the Connacht club championship in 2022 but fell short in the Galway Senior Football Championship final against Corofin last November. Amidst changes in management, with Don Connellan stepping down as manager, Cathal Clancy, a seasoned selector and analyst, is poised to assume leadership of the team.
