Wednesday night next, March 6th will be a big night in Donegal Town as the Abbey Vocational School host a special event, ‘Up for the Final’, to mark the school’s senior team reaching the All-Ireland Colleges final.
The team defeated Dunmore Community School, Galway in the semi-final on Saturday last in Kent Park, Sligo to reach the final of the Masita Post Primary Schools Paddy Drummond Cup competition.
They are due to meet Meath side, Ashbourne Community School, on Saturday, 9th March with venue yet to be decided.
The school is well known as the alma mater of many well-known footballers including Joyce McMullin, Karl Lacey, Paul Durcan, Barry Dunnion, David Walsh and Stephen Griffin while Ulster championship winning captain Michael Lafferty was a teacher there for many years.
But despite all the successes of the past, the boys of 2024 have surpassed all that happened before by winning the Mac Larnon Cup Ulster Colleges title for the first time.
Then on Saturday last they went a step further with a convincing 2-17 to 1-12 win in the All-Ireland semi-final against Dunmore CS.
The final is set for March 9th and to celebrate the school reaching the final, they are holding a special ‘Up for the Final’ on Wednesday of next week.
MC for the night will be Charlie Collins and among the guests will be former players from the school and former county players.
The evening is being billed as ‘An evening of memories, fun and entertainment’.
The night will have a 8 pm throw-in time and all are welcome.
There is no entry free but donations will be accepted and they will go towards team preparation and costs.
The school are also presently fund-raising for the development of playing fields and this will be an opportunity to ‘Sponsor a Square’ to support the development.
