Johnny McGroddy scores nine points in Downings' high-scoring win over Bundoran

Downings held on to come out on top in a high-scoring All-County Football League Division 1 clash against Bundoran on Sunday.

In a game that ebbed and flowed from the first whistle to the last Johnny McGroddy played an inspiring role and posted nine of Downings' points.

Oisin Boyce, Keelin McGoddy, Danny McBride, Shane Boyce, Padraig McGinty, Ronan Gallagher and Conor Boyce also were among the scorers for the locals.

Timmy Govorov led the Bundoran charge with a goal and four points while Anton Govorov, Matthew Duffy and Ryan McGlone also raised white flags for Realt Na Mara.

It was level at half-time, 0-8 to 1-5, with the visitors then falling behind in the second period as McGroddy and company sparked in front of the Bundoran posts. However, Anton Govorov did score a second Bundoran goal before the hosts stacked up the points to go into an 0-18 to 2-5 lead.

However, two quick-fire goals from Matthew Duffy and Ryan McGloin cut the lead to a single point with over 10 minutes remaining.

But with the two teams failing to score again Maxi Curran’s men nervously held on to take the two precious league points by the slimmest of margins.
