Glenswilly 4-17

Glenswilly wrapped up their All-County Football League Division 1 campaign with a comfortable win in Downings, with Michael Murphy ruling the roost.

Murphy was unplayable, scoring 3-6 and it means that Gary McDaid’s team finished their return to the top flight with a balanced campaign, five wins, five losses and two draws. Downings, although beaten well on the evening, avoid any complications in the relegation zone as they now focus on their first appearance in the senior championship in over 30 years.

Glenswilly laid down their marker in the first half, following which they led 2-9 to 1-4, despite being hit by a third-minute goal - the opening score of the game - with Conor Boyce on target for Downings.

However, Glenswilly’s first score was also a goal - through Murphy - and Daithi Gildea also netted in the first half.

Some of the holidaymakers and those in the campervans in Downings for one of their busiest weekends of the year couldn't believe their luck. "Look, there's Michael Murphy ...," could be heard from the teenagers watching on. They even got social media influencer Eric Roberts thrown into the mix, with the Downings' substitute coming on to score a point.

Gildea would go on to score a fine personal total of 1-5, with Kealan Dunleavy getting three from the middle of the field, while the hosts’ Paddy McElwee clocked up six points himself. With five to play, Glenswilly were 2-13 to 1-8 in front before Murphy added goals in the 55th and 59th minutes to ensure his side enjoyed their trip to the seaside.
